History Of The
Westclox Building
In 1885, the ambitious Charles Stahlberg and his partners from Waterbury, Connecticut, ignited a revolution in timekeeping by founding the “United Clock Company” in Peru, IL. By 1887, their vision had transformed into the Western Clock Company, and just a year later, under the leadership of F.W. Matthiessen, it became the Western Clock Manufacturing Company. The name Westclox soon became synonymous with innovation, especially during World War II when the company was a crucial supplier to the U.S. Military. The post-war era saw Westclox introduce groundbreaking products, including the beloved “snooze” alarm, solidifying its place in clock-making history.
However, the late 1970s brought rapid economic changes and the rise of digital technology, challenging the company and leading to the closure of the Peru facility on March 31, 1980.
But the Westclox legacy was far from over. On December 31, 2011, a fierce fire engulfed the old factory, raging for six days and destroying the center section. Yet, the resilient North and South parts stood firm. Then, on June 24, 2014, brothers Tim Turczyn and Cody Grandadam breathed new life into the historic site. Today, the Westclox building is a bustling hub of creativity and community, home to Star Union Spirits, brewery, Fire on fifth brick oven pizzeria, Westclox Event Center venue, and over a dozen thriving small businesses. This iconic landmark beautifully melds its rich heritage with a vibrant future, continuing to inspire and captivate all who visit.
